All in all, Beverly Cleary is a national treasure. She writes beautifully, without dumbing things down (which I love!), tenderly, and honestly. This book fulfills Topic #5 of Equinox #2 Book Challenge: The Earliest Remembered Chapter Book Read in Childhood Beverly Cleary (April 12, 1916 - March 25, 2021) was the author of over 30 books for young adults and children. Her characters are normal children facing challenges that many of us face growing up, and her stories are liberally laced with humour. Some of her best known and loved characters are Ramona Quimby and her sister Beatrice ("Beezus"), Henry Huggins, and Ralph S. Mouse. So, Beverly Cleary died a few weeks ago, and suddenly my news feeds were full of references to Ramona. I love children's literature and know most of the popular works well, so I was dismayed to realize that I had never read any of the Ramona books. This complete collection was available for Kindle, so I got it and read the whole thing from cover to cover. Davy: A timid, skinny boy whom Ramona used to chase around the playground each day in kindergarten. Well, they're good. *Of course* they're good. People have been loving and praising Ramona for decades. But they weren't quite what I expected. From reading my friends' enthusiasm about Ramona, I expected her to be a kind of wild and crazy kid, a child Lucy Ricardo. (For those too young to remember, Lucy Ricardo was the central character of the TV show I Love Lucy, played by Lucille Ball. I'm guess even the young folks will have heard of I Love Lucy -- if not, google it.)

Uncle Hobart Kemp: Howie's uncle who marries Ramona's aunt, Beatrice. He is Mr. Kemp's younger brother. He makes his only appearance in Ramona Forever. Ramona the Pest, like the remaining books in the series, is written from Ramona's point of view. In Ramona the Pest Ramona enters kindergarten. The succeeding books follow her as she grows up and advances through school, usually at the rate of one grade over two books. Written from the 1950s through the 1990s, dates aren't mentioned in the books, and the children are designed to appeal to real children in any time period. The last Ramona book, Ramona's World, was published in 1999, 15 years after the previous one. Cleary's Ramona books have been adapted for Canadian television as Ramona. The 10-part Canadian television series starred Sarah Polley as Ramona and Lori Chodos as Beezus. [11]Grandma Kemp: Howie's grandmother, who lives in the same house and watches Ramona, Howie, Willa Jean, and sometimes Beezus after school. Willa Jean Kemp: Howie's bratty little sister, who is frequently thrust on Ramona. People say that she is very like Ramona when she was little; however, Willa Jean does not seem to possess Ramona's imagination. Reading the series all at once also makes her process of growing up more clear; learning how to get along with her sister, her parents, figuring out her teachers and struggling with classroom behavior -- it really is a joy to watch her grow from a pesky toddler scribbling in library books to a 'zero-teen' year old being trusted to watch her baby sister on her own.
