About this deal

Pro features: Dust, splash and freezeproof: available according to IP53 (Applies when used with OM system (Olympus) splashproof body) Understand up front that the Olympus 90mm f/3.5 Macro is the equivalent of a 180mm telephoto 4X macro in 35mm terms. This fact has significant importance when evaluating depth-of-field, bokeh and camera shake. It also means that this macro lens can double as a fast telephoto, ideal for sporting events, wildlife and so forth. On distant subjects, I actually found that the OM System 90mm f/3.5 Macro IS PRO outperformed my old M.Zuiko 60mm f/2.8 macro in focus speed, especially in brighter conditions. However, at close focusing distances, the 60mm lens was faster – probably because it didn’t need to examine the whole range from 2:1 to wider magnifications. The lens is still under development, but the company expects to launch the 90mm macro in 2023. M.Zuiko 90mm f3.5 Macro IS Pro Key Features In particular, here are what my autofocus speed tests showed. I tested the focusing speed of both lenses from 1x to 0.5x magnification. After 10 replications with each test, the OM System 90mm f/3.5 Macro IS PRO grabbed focus in 5.8 seconds on average, while the 60mm f/2.8 grabbed focus in 5.2 seconds on average. (I also wonder if a newer copy of the 60mm would be even faster, since as I’ve said, mine has seen some things.)

The M.Zuiko ED 90mm F3.5 Macro IS PRO is a lightweight, high-performance telephoto macro lens offering a maximum image magnification of 2x1 .The optional MC-20 2x teleconverter can also be attached, bringing maximum image magnification to 4x2 and allowing ultra-close-up shooting. Close-up shots of flowers, and even virtually microscopic objects such as the scales on a butterfly's wing are reproduced in stunning detail. In addition to these powerful close-up capabilities, the ED 90mm F3.5 Macro IS PRO can be used as a single-focal-length telephoto lens capable of capturing distant subjects with astonishing image clarity. It handles the transition from macro to telephoto seamlessly, allowing the user the versatility of shooting all day without having to worry about changing lenses. if by working aperture, you mean the aperture being set and used, which I usually refer it to as nominal aperture, to differentiate it from "effective" aperture -- it is something that is physical[edit],limited by the edge of glass or edge of iris]/edit], rather than "calculated" or "derived". Here’s the big question for a macro lens with a limited maximum aperture: is it still sharp? Narrower apertures can cause diffraction, which results in less detail in the final image. But, surprisingly, this lens is still sharp even at f8 in S Macro. I actually thought the biggest challenge to getting a sharp shot is that ultra-wide depth at .224m, not diffraction. Which means I actually stepped down the aperture even further a few times. A diffraction calculator suggests a Micro Four Thirds lens becomes diffraction limited at f16, so there’s still a little room here (not much, but some). Want a new Macro Lens? Look no further! The OM System M.Zuiko ED 90mm F3.5 Macro IS PRO Lens, designed for Micro Four Thirds System offers up to 2x magnification. Ultra-high magnification shooting and more magnification than on any lens we’ve ever made. Increase that magnification up to 4x2 with the addition of the optional MC-20 2x teleconverter (sold separately) to capture an unseen world, invisible to the naked eye. IP534 splash & dust proof capabilities with a fluorine coating for unbeatable all-weather performance

The image stabilization mechanism in the lens and the camera body work together to achieve 5-axis sync IS, which delivers up to 7 steps of shutter speed compensation. Furthermore, the ED 90mm F3.5 Macro IS PRO features an acceleration sensor on the lens that precisely detects motion blur for correction of shift, which has a significant impact on macro shooting. No need to bring a tripod, the powerful image stabilization functionality allows the user the flexibility, even for handheld high-resolution photos. IP53 splash & dust proof capabilities with a fluorine coating for unbeatable all-weather performance

Despite the use of plastic, I don’t doubt the lens’s durability. In particular, theweather sealing is advertised as dust-proof and splash-proof up to IP53, meaning extensive protection against dust and splashing water. It’s the same rating given to the rugged OM-1 itself. By comparison, I’ve used my M.Zuiko60mm f/2.8 for years of intense conditions. It doesn’t appear to have an official IP rating, yet has held up better than any of my other lenses. The new 90mm f/3.5 should improve on it even further. This M.Zuiko Digital ED 90mm f/3.5 Macro IS PRO Lens has so many wonderful attributes I almost had to pinch myself. I had trouble sleeping when I first got the lens, it was just too tempting to use it and explore the possibilities with this lens. Yes, I love my 8-25mm and my 40-150mm, but when those lenses arrived, I placed them on the camera like bread and butter and peanut butter and jelly. I loved the images I obtain with those lenses, but they didn’t tempt me to stay up into the wee hours and get outside the way this 90mm lens does.

Pricing Compared to Similar Lenses from Other Camera Systems

As you can see in this butterfly image, and macro and super macro images in general, depth of field is shallow, and there is a general learning curve for DoF for all macro photography. L-Fn (lens function) button is available on the side of the lens so users can change settings with a single operation using their thumb while holding the camera. By these numbers, it seems to me that the 10X image is definitely not fully utilizing the resolution of the sensor. If you want incredible close-ups, especially outdoors, buy the OM System 90mm f3.5 Macro IS Pro. It’s not utterly flawless, but it does what few other lenses can do. The ability to create 4x macro images with autofocus is incredible. And, it’s weather-sealed and reasonably lightweight. Previously, I have been working for years with the OM System M.Zuiko 60mm f/2.8 macro lens. At 1:1 magnification, this lens manages a working distance of 8.3 cm / 3.3 inches from the tip of the lens. Although this may sound almost as good as the new 90mm f/3.5 Macro, it’s a bit of an illusion. For lighting purposes, the 90mm lens is far easier to use with an on-camera speedlight, because the lens itself is longer. In other words, it has a much bigger “flash to subject” distance than a shorter macro lens. This offers more room for a larger diffuser, which improves the quality of my light substantially.

While I found most of the images acceptably sharp, I did tend to push the sharpness slider in post a little further than usual when working with RAW files. What do the images look like with a teleconverter? Besides the autofocus capability, the 90mm also makes Super Macro more accessible with a stabilization of six stops on its own or seven stops with compatible Sync IS bodies. That’s a huge help as camera shake tends to be exaggerated the closer the subject is to the lens. OM System’s weather-sealing is intact too, with the lens given an IP53 rating against dust and moisture. The price is steep for casual snap shooters, but it’s well worth the dollar for serious amateurs and professional photographers. The most obvious comparison is the M.Zuiko 60mm f/2.8 macro, which has a maximum magnification of 1x and has served me well for several years. Although it’s certainly not a 90mm 2x macro lens, it will get the job done for most subjects. Additionally, the Panasonic 45mm f/2.8 also offers 1x magnification, although it has an even shorter working distance.

LH-66E Lens Hood, LC-62G Lens Cap, LR-2 Lens Rear Cap, CS-53 Wrapping Cloth, Instruction Manual, Warranty Card I spent much of my time with this lens saying, “I can’t believe that just focused on something so tiny.” What's clear is that it depends on the lens. It's widely agreed that the 2x TC is less-than-impressive with the 40-150mm Pro. Also what Hubertus said about the Pany 50-200 is true while the Pany 2x TC works well with the Leica 200mm.But arguably even more important is the long focal length of 90mm. That’s a 180mm full-frame-equivalent focal length, which makes it one of the longest macro lenses made today. This is important because it offers a huge working distance compared to most macro lenses (AKA the distance between the front of your lens and your subject). that means if both has same working aperture, set at same magnification, both will have same resolving power. How does this compare to the M.Zuiko60mm f/2.8? Below is a comparison photo from f/14. To my eye, it looks worse than the f/22 image above! I find this performance very impressive by the 90mm f/3.5, especially considering that the M.Zuiko 60mm f/2.8 was, before now, my sharpest lens. OM-1 + OLYMPUS M.60mm F2.8 Macro @ 60mm, ISO 200, 1/200, f/14.0 An ideal telephoto lens for stress-free outdoor shooting of any kind, from nature to landscapes to macro, with IP534 dustproof and splashproof performance, and freezeproof protection down to 14°F/-10°C. And at just 453 grams this lens offers a compact, lightweight, versatile design, for worry-free photography in any environment. OM System ED 90mm F3.5 Macro Lens In Detail Like I mentioned above, I’ve been excited about this lens since it appeared on the OM System Lens Roadmap. But the price of the lens, made me hesitate on pressing the buy button.
