About this deal

The Cragganmore 12 yo is a sherried expression that is lightly peated. The Cragganmore range also has a Distillers Edition, and I have seen a 25 yo as well. There are various independent bottlings from Cragganmore available too.

malted barley is provided by Diageo’s central maltings. Cragganmore uses traditional worm tubs as the cooling solution for their whisky. 5 out of 6 of Diageo’s Classic Malts distilleries use worm tubs for cooling: Cragganmore, Dalwhinnie, Glenkinchie, Oban and Talisker, only exception is Lagavulin. Let’s clear something up right here right now, the is no correlation between price and quality when it come to scotch, and the proof is quite simple.Finish: Short to medium in length and with a very pleasant gentle progressive fade. A touch of cask spicing and barley malts. This cookie is set by Rubicon Project to control synchronization of user identification and exchange of user data between various ad services.

Cragganmore range includes this 12 year old single malt and Distillers Edition. They’ve had special bottlings, such as the 14 year old for Friends of the Classic Malts. Cragganmore 12YO has been matured in second fill bourbon barrels and like mentioned, the whisky is slightly smoky. This malt is also a component for Johnnie Walker, Old Parr and White Horse blended whiskies. By The River (Spey)

Recommendations

Balance: Cragganmore 12 is a malt which divides people. Those who like the basic, and I mean BASIC, flavours of barley-malt, often like this just fine. I have always found Cragganmore 12 to be quite pleasant and enjoyable. There is really no "WOW" factor present, though, for those who seek one out Cragganmore distillery is located in Ballindalloch, Speyside. It sits by the River Spey and it’s also near to the Strathspey railway line, both important factors when the distillery location was decided. The distillery takes its name from the mountain in whose shadow it sits. Taste: Good translation to the palate bringing across malty nuts and toffee alongside honey and just the slightest hint of barrel char and/or smoke. Relatively ‘chewy’ despite its 40% ABV and with a dash of damp earth and minerality which make for a welcome clean taste. Nose: the barley-malt shows sweet and tart citrus; there is also just a hint of grape fruitiness, and very light wood influence. There is no significantly noticeable smoke and only the faintest hint of peat. This nose is straightforward, pleasant, inoffensive, but not remarkable This would be fantastic at a higher abv, but that can be experienced in the several special editions or independent bottlings available for those willing to do some sleuthing. Altogether it’s a solid bottle to start off a beginner’s journey into single malts. So than, why the big difference in price, simple marketing and to a lesser degree demand. Either of which topics are outside the scope of this conversation. In my mind, Cragganmore 12 Year Old is one of those single malts that a Scotch novice should move onto after becoming acquainted with the Big Pair of single malt Scotch, Glenfiddich and Glenlivet. The distillery’s owner, Diageo, recognizes this too, having made the expression the Speyside whisky in its Classic Malts range. The Craggenmore 12 is as every bit as good as any 12 scotch 2 or 3 times it’s price, or for that matter any price.
