About this deal

have loved all of Richard Ayoade's books, but this, his third, is by far my favourite. It's the critical analysis I wouldn't have considered necessary, but it was thrilling to listen to it! I'll link the clip that sold me on the book at the end of the review.

Sally is wearing capri pants, whose softly iridescent gun-metal hue speaks of an elegance beyond those common folk who scrap it out in the scrum of the quotidian.”

Richard Ayoade has been slammed for praising Graham Linehan’s upcoming book (Picture: SWNS / Getty) It seems you no longer need to even express gender-critical views to become a target of the mob. Apparently, it is now enough just to associate with prominent opponents of trans ideology to be marked out for condemnation. But to keep spiked free we ask regular readers like you, if you can afford it, to chip in – to make sure that those who can’t afford it can continue reading, sharing and arguing. Amazingly, Richard Ayoade managed to write a book about this film. A good book. I still impressed by this. Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop has a book club --- they have to select this at some point, right?! In May 2020, it was announced that Ayoade would host the 2020 British Academy Television Awards, [84] [85] which was held behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [86] He returned to host the 2021 and 2022 ceremonies.

Reading Ayoade’s book in Hong Kong in 2020, no longer on holiday but just on life, in a world so different to the one where Top entered, completes a strange triangle of cultural artefact and consumer. A triangle that means absolutely nothing to anyone else, but a bit of something to me.

Of course, in recent years, Linehan has also become a bête noire of the trans lobby. The memoir, Tough Crowd, is billed as a humorous reflection on his journey from being one of the UK’s most beloved television comedy writers to becoming a pariah for being forthright about his gender-critical beliefs. Photograph: Antonio Olmos for the Guardian Richard Ellef Ayoade ( / ˌ aɪ oʊ ˈ ɑː d i/ EYE-oh- AH-dee; born 23 May 1977) is a British [1] [2] comedian, actor, broadcaster, and filmmaker. [3] He played the role of socially awkward IT technician Maurice Moss in Channel 4 sitcom The IT Crowd (2006–2013), for which he won the 2014 BAFTA for Best Male Comedy Performance. The writer created multiple celebrated sitcoms but has not worked in TV for several years (Picture: AFP via Getty Images) In 2008, Ayoade directed the music videos for two Vampire Weekend singles: " Oxford Comma", filmed in one long take, [10] and " Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa". [35] That year he also directed videos for The Last Shadow Puppets songs " Standing Next to Me" and " My Mistakes Were Made for You", the latter of which was inspired by Federico Fellini's Toby Dammit. [10] [36] He directed a live Arctic Monkeys DVD, At the Apollo (2008), recorded at the Manchester Apollo on super 16mm film. It was previewed at Vue cinemas across the UK in October 2008 and released on DVD the next month. [37] Ayoade was featured in Paul King's 2009 film Bunny and the Bull, playing an extremely boring museum tour guide. [38] That year he also directed two music videos for the Arctic Monkeys, " Crying Lightning" and " Cornerstone", and videos for Kasabian's " Vlad the Impaler", starring Fielding, and " Heads Will Roll" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. One record that does exist of his beginnings in comedy comes from a documentary the local ITV station made about Footlights at the time. You can see Ayoade alongside a young John Oliver, both in fetching 1990s sweaters, walking along a windswept beach, apparently improvising. “It was literally one of the things that made me not want to do interviews again. You have to imagine: a bunch of 21-year-olds, never-been-out-of-the-house type people. Our tour manager is another 21-year-old saying, ‘This is very important publicity, Anglia television want to do a feature.’ It was awful. They’d ask us to do a sketch while walking and if we complained they’d say, ‘Trust us, we’re professionals, we won’t make you look ridiculous’. Also, we were in this stage when we were just trying to be Chris Morris. Everyone spoke in that I’M TALKING LIKE THIS voice, all the way through. And it’s documented in this awful video, it’s really humiliating.”

After appearing in Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding's radio series The Boosh, Ayoade was part of the original cast of Barratt and Fielding's The Mighty Boosh television show. He was originally selected to play the role of dangerous villain Dixon Bainbridge. However, by the time the radio series transferred to television he was under contract by Channel 4 and was only able to act in the pilot before leaving The Boosh. The part was taken by fellow Darkplace actor and eventual IT Crowd co-star Matt Berry. He later returned in the second series in 2005, to play the part of the belligerent shaman Saboo. [6] Ayoade continued his association with The Mighty Boosh in the third series, reprising his role and acting as script editor. [25] In 2005, he played the role of Ned Smanks in Chris Morris' and Charlie Brooker's sitcom Nathan Barley. [26] Ayoade's Dean Learner character was resurrected in 2006 to host a comedy chat show, Man to Man with Dean Learner, on Channel 4. The different guests were played each week by Holness. [27] Ayoade appeared in the satirical comedy series Time Trumpet in 2006, which is set in the year 2031 and saw Ayoade and other celebrities reminiscing about the year 2007 onwards.
