About this deal

We all know that getting your hair coloured at the salon is expensive, so if you’re trying to save yourself some money by spreading out your appointments, the Dove Colour Care Shampoo should be top of your shopping list. Green shampoo is a color-depositing shampoo, often referred to as a toning shampoo. A color-depositing shampoo works to neutralize unwanted tones in your hair. Remember that you will need at least 3-4 washes before you notice any big difference, so you have to be patient.

Color-depositing shampoo is not meant to replace your regular shampoo. It can be harsh and drying to your hair and should only be used once (max. twice) a week. Green color-depositing shampoo allows you to tone your hair at home. Green shampoo works by neutralizing any unwanted red tones in the hair, leaving it looking vibrant and refreshed. When you wash your hair after using the color corrector, you will find that the red tones in your hair have totally disappeared.

Although similar to hair bleach, color correctors are not nearly as harsh on your hair. They enter your hair shaft and break down the red color molecules within it.The wrong shampoo can strip your color and leave strands looking brassy and dull, which is why it's extra important to choose the right one. While I love this shampoo's results, I'm not in love with the process. First of all, because the shampoo contains dyes, it can leave behind a greenish-yellow stain. The stain isn't permanent, but it can be annoying to have to use gloves (as recommended on the bottle). Although this shampoo can be used daily, I use it about four times a week, since I only wash my hair that often.

Then apply the green shampoo. Make sure to massage it into your hair and scalp, just like you would with a regular shampoo. Toning shampoos work to neutralize unwanted undertones by depositing the complementary color of the color you are trying to get rid of. But the key here is that the complementary colors of orange and red are different.

Dampen your hair and apply the green shampoo all over – if needed, part your hair into 4 or more sections to make the application process easier. Make sure that your curls are completely coated in the product, and then leave it on for the manufacturer’s recommended time. If you made your green shampoo at home, leave it on for about 5-10 minutes.

As is the case with all color-treated hair, dye-induced redheads will want to look for color-safe shampoos that won't strip your shade. "Look for shampoos that include moisturizing properties such as aloe vera or argan oil to keep the hair healthy and minimize the chances of the hair becoming dry and brittle," says Powell. In this case, too, you'll want to avoid sulfates, parabens, and alcohols in your formulas. Now that you know how to use green shampoo to neutralize red hair, you’re ready to achieve the perfect, balanced hair color you’ve been aiming for.Green shampoos, on the other hand, are created specifically for red hair and darker hair colors that experience red undertones. Another option you have when your hair comes out too red is to use an ammonia-free dye that’s darker than your hair. Doing so will cover the red, leaving you with a more wearable shade. If you opt for this one, be sure to follow the same application process mentioned above. Hair Color Corrector (or Color Remover) Be sure to do a strand test before applying it to your entire head, as DIY treatments can yield unpredictable results. Other Shampoos for Different Hair Colors You shouldn’t use green shampoo every day instead of your regular shampoo. We advise using it once a week and following this routine: When applying a green shampoo or hair mask like Dark Envy, suggests George, proceed with caution. “Wear gloves to prevent stains on your hands,” he suggests. “Avoid getting it on your scalp. Apply the mask evenly, section-by-section. You can use it up to once or twice a week. Don’t panic when you see the dark green color come out of the bottle or jar—that’s simply due to the color-balancing combination of direct dyes in the formulas.”
