About this deal

When I say “off camera”, it means that the flash is off the camera in the most literal sense. This is not an indication of where the light has been placed relative to the photo subject, but to provide clarity on how the flash relates to the camera itself. In the purist sense, the flash unit is not directly attached to the camera body. As a general rule, a large-size umbrella creates a softer light than a small-size umbrella. It also spread the light more and leaves no space for a light spill. A large umbrella allows you to create full-body portraits, photograph groups of people, or illuminate a large space (e.g., an interior for real estate photography).

Most studio strobes will have a small hole to insert the umbrella’s handle, and a knob to tighten it in place.

How should I mount my umbrella?

Like softboxes, an umbrella is often used in portraits and other types of studio photography. While softboxes are easier to control, umbrellas tend to be more affordable and easier to set up. If you have an older or less powerful flash, then we recommend using a Triple Threat adaptor, which allows photographers to mount up to three speedlites within their umbrella to increase overall output. How should I light my umbrella? In this series tracing the birth and growth of the Scottish nation, to give the footage a suitably grand and epic feel, Neville sought out a new camera. "And so began my relationship with Canon," he says. "It was a big moment when I bought my first Canon EOS 5D Mark II [now succeeded by the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV]. I used it for both stills and filming, and it provided me with brilliant results. Using full-frame photography in my film work really helped it stand out against everything else. The difference was monumental, and I started using the Canon EOS 5D Mark II in my documentaries from that point on." The shape is also important and refers mostly to the umbrella’s depth. Deep umbrellas (aka parabolic umbrellas) provide more control over the direction of light, less spread, and more contrast. They have a round profile and usually are large-size umbrellas. Shallow umbrellas cover a wide area and produce a soft and even spread light. Four industry pros share their tips on preparing the perfect photography portfolio – from building a narrative to presenting your work.

Public sector organisations the world over trust Canon for their monitoring, surveillance and production needs. From decades of traveling the world with my camera, I’ve learned – sometimes the hard way – that a camera rain cover is an essential part of any photographer’s kit. Here’s why: The most dramatic skies for landscape photography often occur during those brief moments before and after a storm. Either side of that moment, you’re probably going to get wet. If wildlife photography is more your cup of tea, I also have news for you: many animals don’t care about the rain. They’ll still be out there doing what they’ve got to do.

What size of umbrella should I buy?

Umbrellas are great for beginners. But there are a few things that you should know before buying your first one. See how the umbrella lights the subject compared to a softbox Types of Photography Umbrellas
