About this deal

Fer-de-Lance was published in 1934, so we don’t have long to wait. Something tells me he has nothing to worry about. Plot [ edit ] I remembered that one evening after dinner I had heard Wolfe and Marko discussing the trout they had caught in their early days, Marko claiming he had once landed one 40 centimeters long, and I had translated it into inches — 16. I swiveled my head to ask Wolfe if it was in the Cijevna that he and Marko had got trout, and he said yes, but in a tone of voice that did not invite conversation, so I let it lie. And now I’m going to do something unusual and give you the last lines of the book, because it doesn’t make any difference to the mystery and it’s what made me fall in love with Stout: He frowned at me, then got it, and did something he never does. He left his chair and came. We stood side by side, looking. The caller put a finger to the button, and the doorbell rang. The odds are overwhelming that when historians look at the bright blue late October of 1975, the only thing they will keep about the twenty-seventh is that it was the day Rex Stout died.”

In Some Buried Caesar,Archie and Nero are stranded when their car breaks down on the side of the road in a private pasture. A nearby local feud over the ownership of a prized bull leads to murder after a restaurant plans to buy the cow and feed it to the town as a publicity stunt. While many point the finger at the bull itself, Nero is convinced the killer is more human and less bovine. He will need to go through the list of suspects, including Archie’s new love interest, to find the right killer and bring them to justice. Wolfe aficionados know this speculation, but I doubt everybody does, so before you make a belated visit to the online baby registry, here are a few things to take into account. Too many cooks spoil the broth” is a common phrase, but in this novel, Too Many Cooks, itmeansthere’s a murder that Nero Wolfe can only solve. At a five-star gathering of some of the world’s best chefs and cooks, Wolfe is asked to give the keynote speech at the party. However, a surprise of poison and murder is mixed in with the other ingredients, and to find the killer and bring them to justice, Nero and Archie need to figure out which of the visiting guests has a killing plan. Contains the short stories " Home to Roost", " The Cop-Killer" and " The Squirt and the Monkey" [1] :82 A Family Affair is a Nero Wolfe detective novel published by the Viking Press in 1975. It is the last Nero Wolfe book written by Rex Stout who died less than six months after the publication of the book.Insistent Terminology: Wolfe absolutely refuses to refer to Podgorica by its new name "Titograd", even at the risk of drawing unwanted attention. Dr. Johnson said: “Such excess of stupidity is not in nature.” Do you think Archie Goodwin should write and talk like a grade-school English teacher? Having written nearly three million of his words I know quite well how he handles them. Not a single one of the changes you suggest makes any sense…..

In the middle of this, Nero's daughter, Carla, makes an appearance. She has herself become a friend to Marko and is as determined as her father to find his killer. This does not end well for her. Shortly thereafter, Nero not only leaves the brownstone, but the entire continent of North America, with Archie in tow to the big man's home country of Montenegro. The goal is now to find the killers of two people who were near and dear to a man who endeavors to keep the entire world at arms length. After high school, he concluded, like Archie, that college had little to offer him, joined the Navy and was assigned to Teddy Roosevelt’s yacht, but ultimately decided it wasn’t for him, bought himself out and spent five years roaming around the country: “I saw every goddamn state and must have had at least 150 jobs in 150 different cities.” Para trás e por tempo indeterminado, ficam as estufas de orquídeas, os pratos requintados de cozinha, as leituras, a cerveja ...a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p Stout, Rex (2007). McAleer, John J. (ed.). Justice Ends at Home and Other Stories. New York: Viking Press. ISBN 9780670411054. The Speechless: To explain his inability to speak Serbian, Wolfe considers having Archie pretend to be a deaf mute, but decides it would require too much acting, and they would be overheard speaking.

This book and the pre-war novel Over My Dead Body both involve international intrigue over Montenegro, but under very different circumstances, first concerning Nazi designs on the Balkans, and later in the context of Josip Broz Tito's Yugoslavia.

The author, Rex Stout, wrote many other Nero Wolfe stories before this one. There is a reason in that factoid not to make this your first Wolfe read. Using Rex Stout’s knowledge of radio, And Be a Villaincenters around a radio personality whose fear of being on air is confirmed when a guest dies at the microphone. Nero Wolfe comes to solve the case and figure out what killed the guest: a bad beverage or a dangerous killer. With seemingly everyone involved in the case lying about different facts, it’s a challenging puzzle that only Nero Wolfe can solve.

Language Barrier: This is the only Wolfe novel where the majority of the action takes place in non-English-speaking places. As a polyglot, Wolfe is able to converse with everyone they meet, but Archie is out of the loop. This doesn't stop him from flirting with a pretty Montenegrin girl.Everything changes when Wolfe's friend Marko Vukic is murdered. Wolfe doesn't just leave his brownstone ... where his meals are prepared by his personal chef Fritz Brenner and he spends parts of his day with his orchids ... he leaves the country. He heads to Montenegro which requires getting on several different planes. Wolfe is the man who doesn't trust machinery and will only let Archie drive him in a car ... when absolutely necessary. Wolfe has vowed to bring the man who murdered his friend to justice.
