Established in Alness, Ross-shire in 1817 by the blind Captain Hugh Munro, little of the original Teaninich distillery now remains after a number of expansions and new construction projects. The 1960s and 1970s was an amazing time for Scotch whisky. No less than sixteen new distilleries were built during these two decades. He was delighted by the passing of the Excise Act late in 1823, which made it easier to set up and run a distillery business in the Highlands and was accompanied by stiffer penalties for those caught distilling illegally.
