About this deal

Seiko – the brand that has become synonymous with affordable and qualitative affordable timepieces. In fact, we would even dare to say that Seiko’s watches are some of the best value money can buy if you factor in finish, quality, and durability. The Seiko SPB101J1 (SBDC083 ), also known as the Seiko Sumo, is perhaps one of the greatest entry-level sports watches and one of the better built-in Seikos line-up for the money. In 2019 Seiko finally updated their Sumo models giving them a slightly different and refined look, but perhaps most important an in-house improved movement Caliber 6R35.

The good news is that if you want to change to a different strap or bracelet, you can easily do so thanks to the drilled lugs which makes changing the bracelet a breeze. The Prospex in the name stands for ”Professional specifications” and simply means that the watch is built according to the needs and wants of professionals. These watches are made to handle seriously harsh conditions, including those that professionals subject them too. If you require an extra large bracelet or you are in need of additional links these may be supplied at an additional cost. As a dive watch should, the SPB103j1 offers great legibility. It has large hour markers and hands which provide excellent contrast against the green dial.

As I was expecting, being a Seiko long-time lover, the overall quality of this piece is outstanding. The quality-to-price ratio is pretty high and it seems like this Seiko belongs to an upper category. The watch is presented on a three-link satin-brushed bracelet with polished edges on the middle links. The bracelet has a diver’s extension and safety clasp. The movement is perhaps the biggest difference going from Seiko’s 14-year-old 6R15 to the new in-house caliber 6R35. The movement is automatic with a central rotor and offers a power reserve of 70 hours, which is a huge improvement of 20 hours from the 6R15. This robust and durable movement gives makes this SeikoSPB101J1 a greatwatch in this price class. The movement beats at a 3Hz frequency making 21.600 beats per hour.

When purchasing a watch which has a metal bracelet with adjustable links, we will gladly adjust the watch bracelet to fit your wrist before sending the watch to you - free of charge! It is today one of the largest watch manufacturers today if we look at production numbers, and its great popularity has led to the brand releasing countless models in terms of design, purpose, and also price. Seiko’s watches range in price from less than 100 USD up to the thousands. Paying more than a thousand dollars, or even more than five hundred dollars for a Seiko is not something everyone is willing to do, but if we look at some of these watches in detail, it becomes very evident that you really get a lot in return. And in many cases, they still prove to be great value for money. The Seiko Prospex Diver 200m SBDC031 was launched in 2007, as a mid-range offer, above the entry-level Turtle and Samurai and below the MarineMaster 300m. A better movement than the two affordable pieces on one side, a case with more attention to details too, but a lower water-resistance and no sapphire crystal like the MM300. The Seiko “Sumo” Diver 200m SBDC031, as is was between 2007 until 2018. In the same vein as what’s been done in 2019, as well as what we’ve seen on the King Samurai and King Turtle, Seiko this year once again adds another layer of high-end materials to one of its emblematic watches. The previous Sumo already started with a sapphire crystal. The 2022 Seiko Sumo focus on the resistance of all external parts, with new materials, as well as its looks, with new colours and dials. The Seiko Prospex Sumo is powered by Seiko’s 6R35 automatic movement, which provides a power reserve of up to 70 hours. The movement is accurate and reliable, and has been tested to meet Seiko’s high standards for precision and durability. The SeikoSPB101J1 has a sporty and robuststainless steel 3-piece-bracelet with a width of 20mm with brushed links and polished accents. The bracelet also has a wet-suit extension that offers a large enough extension to be used for putting the watch over your wetsuit. The bracelet really gives the overall impression of the Sumo a seamless look and feel. On the wrist, it gives the impression that it will never let you down. Bezel This is generally a very simple procedure. We can do this for you, or you can get the watch adjusted locally. Option 1. Specify your wrist measurement and we will adjust it before being sent There are some updates though, mainly for the bezel and the dial. First, the still bezel retains its coin-edge profile and is still unidirectional with a 60-minute scale. Yet, you’ll notice that the insert has new fonts, without the extended “fat” numerals. It does, however, retain its internal facet. The second evolution regards the crystal. Previously made in mineral “Hardlex” glass, Seiko fits its new Sumo SPB103J1 with a sapphire crystal.

The watch has applied hour markers with polished metal frames and applied Lumibrite. The minutes and hour hands are sword-shaped and are quite wide.At its very edge, closest to the crystal, it is sloped. This means the bezel sits taller than the actual crystal, which keeps it protected and minimizes the risk of getting scratches on it. Speaking of the crystal, this watch is equipped with a sapphire crystal. This is something that the predecessor did not have. A big improvement indeed. The watch is equipped with a sapphire crystal, making it extremely durable in rough conditions, and with a water resistance of 200M, you won’t have to worry about using your watch in water. Although the water resistance is told to be 200M, Seiko always tests their watches to see if they can handle more pressure than they are made for, which is done by always testing 25% more than what is specified. With that said, inofficially the case is 250M water-resistant. The lugs are 20mm, which is one of the most common sizes for watch straps, and with the drilled holes on the side, it is easy to remove and change straps and bracelets on it.The drilled lugs also contribute to giving the watch a more tool-like appearance which really enriches the tool-like look. Tuna, Samurai, Alpinist, Turtle, and many more… There are dozens of emblematic watches with Seiko‘s logo printed on their dials. Many are part of the Prospex range, dedicated to dive watches and professionally-speced models in general. The collection has been largely revamped recently, with many of the classic models updated and upgraded with more resistant materials and better execution – think about the King Samurai, the King Turtle or the new Shogun. Slightly overlooked recently, it’s now time for the Sumo to resurface, with new editions with revised materials and cool design elements. Here are the Seiko Sumo Prospex Diver 200m SPB321J1 & SPB323J1. An emblematic model from 2007 The dial of the Seiko SPB101J1 is slightly matte which gives it a textured and rich finish and also prevents glare and distracting reflections. The dial has not changed very much from the predecessor as the text is the same, the date window still has the white squared line around it and the Prospex logo still is present. The dial is however richly filled with luminova, or as Seiko calls it “LumiBrite”, which really does glow brightly in the dark.
