About this deal

I really enjoyed the Port Ruighe, even though it's not your typical Talisker. That nose in particular is an amazing melange of marmalade and honey-glazed ham, a marriage made in heaven. It does not possess the raw impact of the standard 10 year old, losing some of its "Talisker-ness" in the process, but as an addition to their range, I think the Port Ruighe fills a worthy niche. With being having rich smoky profiles, they complement each other well and the citrus notes in this case add a wonderful caramelised aspect to the fish. Meanwhile, if it’s season when you’re reading this, consider enjoying a mince pie alongside Port Ruighe. Could you imagine a better fireside experience?

In terms of its appropriate use for different occasions, this is a wonderfully versatile whisky. Indeed, it’s something that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed sipping alone on a quiet evening with a cigar. However, it’s an excellent choice for special events or after a big dinner with friends.Palate: Wine-like berry fruit, much more fruity than expected from the nose. Also wet peat, spongecake with damson jam, chocolate raisins, earth, burnt gingerbread. The peat smoke is much more evident on the palate than the nose. In 1960, the distillery burned down and was silent until 1962 while it was being rebuilt. A decade later the maltings closed and the distillery began getting its requirements from Glen Ord.Without prejudice to the section Liability below, the Service may be temporarily unavailable during maintenance, updates, etc. We shall make reasonable efforts to inform you of any unavailability due to maintenance or updates.

That smoke is so sweet and rich. With time in the glass, a toffee note emerges. I could nose this all day. Definitely appeals to me. Nose: Smoke comes in a sophisticated way. Sweet peat and light fruity and salty notes. Red wine with plums. Finish: Drying smoke, peat, spices and more traces of red fruit (berries). Not overly long, but very pleasant nonetheless. Balance: Excellent continuity from nose through finish. Fans of this style (sweet and smokey) will take to it immediately, but it may not appeal to all. Very approachable neat (tame, almost), quite possibly at the expense of the distillery character we know and love - the Talisker "fire" is absent in this one. Is this a bad thing? Talisker 1998/2017 (56.6%, OB for Keepers Of The Quaich, cask #6829, refill sherry butt, 618 bottles) - by Angus - 040420

Experiment with a bottle of the smoky, slightly darker Talisker Storm or indulge in the cask aged Talisker 18 Year Old to experience the dram that was crowned Best Whisky in the World at the 2007 World Whisky awards. Also on offer for the connoisseurs out there is Talisker's Port Ruighe and Distiller's Edition , the latter of which is double-matured in Amoroso sherry casks for a deep, rich flavour.

The long finish becomes very smoky, dark and sweet with some earthy notes at the death. Outstanding. Comment: A departure for Talisker and as someone who generally dislikes red wine finishes this was much more drinkable than I expected. It was a difficult journey, often made in horrendous weather conditions and loss of life was not uncommon… Merchants with an interest in Portugal spied an opportunity. A gap was there to be filled and the full-bodied, robust wines of the Douro Valley were already proving popular with British consumers. The mountainous landscape that surrounded the valley made the transport of wine over land impossible so, instead, barrels were taken down the Douro River to the city of Oporto and from there, shipped to the British Isles, via the Atlantic Ocean.
