The switch isn’t a standalone device: it can be powered only by connecting its fifth port to a PoE switch or power injector. The idea is that the GS105PE extends the PoE capabilities of the main switch to those places in the office it can’t reach. The switch provides PoE passthrough services on ports 1 and 2, but it prioritises port 1, so it will shut power to port 2 if consumption reaches the maximum power budget.
By listening in on the IGMP conversation between hosts and routers, the NETGEAR GS105PE ProSafe Plus switch can maintain a map as to which links need which IP multicast streams. The NETGEAR GS105PE ProSafe Plus switch therefore will be able to forward multicast traffic only to the links that have asked for them and cut multicast traffic from links that do not contain a multicast listener. Essentially, IGMP snooping helps optimise multicast performance at Layer 2 and is especially useful for bandwidth-intensive IP multicast applications such as IPTV.
PoE pass through is getting power from PSE (Power Source Equipment) (eg. GS752TP, the PoE Smart Switch) and provides surplus power to other PoE PDs (Powered Devices).
On top of the Plug-n-Play Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, this NETGEAR GS105PE switch also offer essential networking features such as two (2) PoE ports, VLAN, QoS, IGMP Snooping, Link Aggregation (LAG), rate limiting and traffic monitoring. User can configure Port Mirroring, Flow Control, IGMP Snooping, Loop detection, VLAN, QoS, Rate Limit, and Broadcast Storm Filtering. GS105PE can be powered by either IEEE 802.3af or IEEE 802.3at from either a PoE switch or a PoE injector.
Note on 802.3at interop issues with certain Cisco switches: Interop problems have been identified when the GS105PE is powered by some Cisco PoE+ switches. Certain Cisco switches (such as the 3560CG-8-PD) are pre-standard 802.3at and do not fully meet the 802.3at standard. Other Cisco switches (such as the Catalyst 2960S) have also been found to be not fully compatible and Cisco has a bug open for this. Be careful not to mix it up with the Reset button. The Reset button restarts the switch, it does not restore it to factory default settings. Insert a straightened paper clip or a similar device into the hole of the Factory Default button and hold for two to three seconds. If you press the Factory Default button too long, some switches change to recovery mode, signified by the LED light turning from green to amber. If this happens, power cycle the switch or press the Reset button to reboot the device.

Even if the WN203 has a power consumption corresponding to a class 2, it is a class 0 device, so it cannot be powered on when the GS105PE is powered by an 802.3af switch or injector.
