Your vet may have recommended a prescription diet. Cats with urinary issues often benefit from a diet that keeps the urine at a specific pH. The aim is to stop crystal or stone formation within the bladder or kidneys. Examples include: Royal Canin Urinary, Hills c/d or Purina Proplan UR. Cats with kidney disease also benefit from a diet that is low in protein and phosphorous. Examples include: Royal Canin Renal, Hills k/d or Purina Proplan NF. Make dietary changes slowly. You should encourage your dog to drink more water. This is considered key to preventing further dog struvite stones. Encourage your dog to drink as much as possible by including a flavour enhancer in his or her water bowl if necessary. Probiotics - (Enterococcus faecium) reduces pathogenic bacteria within the gastrointestinal tract thereby lessening the risk of ascending urinary tract infections of faecal origin. Your cat may prefer eating and drinking from glass or ceramic bowls because plastic ones can have an unpleasant smell and taste, and metal bowls make a noise. 3. Urinary specific supplements may help some cats. A 6-8 week trial will be sufficient time to see if they make a positive impact. They can be sprinkled onto food. Since meat is the best and most natural producer of acidic urine, a homemade diet is likely to help prevent struvite stones ever forming even if your pet does develop another UTI. Surgery. For removal of large urinary stones or those which don’t respond well to dietary treatment, cystotomy surgery may be required. Often animals will recover within 1-2 weeks. Some blood may be seen in the urine for the first week following surgery. The stones will be sent away for analysis so a longer-term plan can be made for your dog’s treatment.
