Anime UK News enjoyed the handling of Yuta's arc and how Gojo's character is explored more in depth in the film than in the original series. Sunghoo Park, who directed the first season of the series' anime adaptation, originally wanted to cover Yuta's story in the first few episodes of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime but decided to begin the show with Yuji's introduction to the world of sorcerers and curses. The chapters were later published in a single tankōbon volume that was retroactively titled Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and released along with the third volume of Jujutsu Kaisen on December 4, 2018. Park noted there were multiple challenges in making the animated movie, when compared with his experience with live-actions, due to the amount of animation needed.The original idea behind Rika was that she would become stronger the more time she spends with Yuta.

Since Rika is no ordinary curse, his plight is noticed by Satoru Gojo, a teacher at Jujutsu High, a school where fledgling exorcists learn how to combat curses. In the original format, Park would adapt the series' first three episodes to develop Yuji and then replace him with Okkotsu, but that idea was discarded.Boston Bartand Brigade and Otaquest said Yuta is a more appealing character than Yuji Itadori due to their different curses, which Otaquest said makes Yuji simple, like Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach, in contrast to the more compelling Yuta. The fight scenes were generally well-regarded by critics, which include the handling of limbs and explosions. The figure's box came in great shape, allowing it to be added to the collector's value of the figure. It's the perfect launching point to enter Akutami's ongoing series, or the ideal complement while you're waiting for the next in the series.

Seki had little-to-no understanding of his character, due to how comical and simple he is shown in contrast to the more elaborate characterizations from the rest of the cast. Gojo’s entire teaching method seems to be giving advice, reassuring his students with a thumbs up, and leaving them to get a hands-on experience about everything. Park later felt that telling the Jujutsu Kaisen prequel would fit the movie format more than a television series.
