Description

As Cliff makes his way through the courses, he shares with the reader some of his insights and how his training is slowly helping him to become more sinister and a better killer.

I wanted to see them woven together, or for something to bring the various characters and plots together (ideally in a way that would give them a bit more actual character work), but it was just three chopped up accounts of three unconvincingly elaborate plans to kill people, and by the end I will admit to skimming. Who hasn’t wondered for a split second what the world would be like if the object of your affliction ceased to exist? A funny, fast-paced, flip-the-playbook mystery in which three ordinary citizens are trained in murder on a luxurious hidden estate . The hardback edition has beautiful foil stamping on the cover and end papers with a lovely map of the McMasters campus.

The emotions and struggles of Cliff, Jemma and Dulcie were so intriguing and like riding a rollercoaster. The narrative is maybe too drawn out, but I do understand that it is quite important to get the full backstory and the gory details. Strong narrative flow helps push the story along, though there are times it lags and kept me waving my hand in the air in hopes of spurring things along.

This piece, part textbook, part novel, and even with a slice of journal, offers the reader a varied view on murder and how to execute it properly, if you will pardon the pun. Wonderful idea, lacked execution, and the last section feels like it was a cut chapter the author insisted on including, rather than a proper ending. It felt a bit gimmicky and it took a while until I realized there was actually a story here, and not an actual guide (a tweak in the description could help). Let’s face it we have all at times felt the urge to do bad things to those who can hold the fate of our employment in their hands, therefore I will start by saying this is in no way an instruction manual and if I am honest after reading the motivations of the characters in this book I think I will stick to just grumbling about my bosses as on the whole they don’t seem that bad. The McMasters Conservatory is a secretly located college, where you can go to learn the various arts needed to carry out murder, but only if your intended victim is someone that the world will be a better place without! Harbinger warns from the start that not all three students will succeed in their respective missions, fostering a sense of mystery surrounding who fails, why they fail, and how spectacularly.Welcome to The McMasters Conservatory for the Applied Arts – a luxurious, clandestine college dedicated to the fine art of murder where earnest students study how best to “delete” their most deserving victim.
