Amotivation exists when there is a complete lack of intention to behave and there is no sense of achievement or purpose when the behavior is performed.

When an environment provides enough support for the satisfaction of the psychological needs of autonomy, competence and relatedness, an individual may experience self-determined forms of motivation: intrinsic motivation, integration, and identification. When students engage in challenging tasks, the processes and connections in the brain begin to change, which makes them more equipped to tackle future learning.There’s a lot to be said for people that regularly smile, offer a happy and cheery outlook on life and generally come across as upbeat and pleasant to be around – regardless of how they’re actually feeling.

The discussion on the key drivers ends with a description of metamotivation, which is where students regulate their own motivation. Because my pedagogy is rooted in popular education, the transformation and affirmation that occurs within the classroom is really what prompted me to become an educator and keeps me coming back. In my classroom, I look to do this by reminding students that what matters is their own progress, what they are able to do and what knowledge they have.
