Ghostbusters: The Board Game is a co-operative miniatures-based experience that sees up to four players (it can also be played alone) taking on the role of the four Ghostbusters as they move (or drive in Ecto-1) around the board catching ghosts and closing spirit gates. As the Ghostbusters you’ll mostly be ambling around the board while busting ghosts and closing down gates to the Spirit World If either of those terms means nothing to you, then you seriously need to go and watch the movie. On the beginning of each round, each Ghostbuster takes a turn, being allotted two action points and one maneuver.

Yesterday’s post, talking about the Ankh Kickstarter game, has got me thinking about my own (tiny) collection of Kickstarter games – tiny, since I sold most of my games off between house moves. Ghost cards, on the other hand, list the roll required to hit and to capture, what happens when they get hit, and what happens when the Ghostbuster attacking them misses.

There is a lot of content that remains completely unknown to me, and I think that’s really quite sad. Whereas 10 years ago, most big TV or film licenses would have had the ubiquitous videogame tie-in, now it seems like board games are being seen as a viable method of marketing with the likes of Terminator Genisys, Back to the Future, Mars Attacks and, of course, Star Wars all getting the tabletop treatment. By hitting Slimer you can coax him towards a Ghostbuster by two spaces, and a miss sends him off in a random direction, so with a bit of patience you can lure him away from his goal.

By the time I’d moved on to the second chapter, two of my team already had their level 4 abilities unlocked. This means that by the time you’re facing off against big nasties like Slimer or the Marshmallow Man, your team members will feel more like individual characters, each with their own specialties, rather than just four carbon copies. Despite all these facts (and exclamation points), I was never able to get myself to back the project.Missions three and four of the first campaign proved a bit more of a challenge, though, and though we victored in them all there was a feeling they could very quickly have gotten out of hand. This is indicated by a character card that also shows how difficult the ghosts are to trap and any special rules they may have. Players can opt for an episodic experience (2-4 hours) that spans multiple scenarios to where they level their characters up as they go.

Sure, the big white deluxe box is lovely, but those bags on either side of the box in the above Instagram photo are also expansions in the same mode as the Slimer box. Four players argue over whether the best strategy is a straight-up attack, trying to close the nearest gate first or splitting up to confuse their opponent. In the game, players choose one of the four Ghostbusters character figures - Peter Venkman, Egon Spengler, Winston Zeddemore and Ray Stantz - then select one of the game's pre-written scenarios, beginning a game session that lasts from 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the chosen scenario(s) and degree of difficulty. The catch is that with just one Boogaloo present on the board you need to summon a second one by sacrficing ghosts that have a class equal to four or greater at an open gate. A boss fight awaits you at the final scenario in each chapter, culminating in a showdown with the legendary Stay Puft Marshmallow Man himself, represented by a sizable playing piece that looms over the board.
