Seriously, Stone's movie may be entertaining, but I have a feeling he may miss the subtle humor and strange beauty of Winslow's writing. Ben and Chon are best friends who have different views on life and how to live it, almost yin/yang opposites, but have two things in common: they share a gf, (O)phelia, and are in the business of growing and selling primo hydro mary jane. But if you were to take that summary and then guess on the contents of this book before reading it, you would probably hit upon many of the same elements included by Winslow. Every now and then the family enjoy a strange feast with an unusual meat as the focus of the celebration.

Despite the gritty and violent nature of the story, the book is also laced with a black humor that has a lot to say about how goddamn silly this country can be at times.Apparently, she’d he’d been working on a concept novel that didn’t entirely work out and so instead, that story got put into this book.

Creepy, funny and thought-provoking, it will delight readers with a taste for surreal horror and black comedy. Then there’s Chauzida, the newly raised prince of the Aram Cosseilhatz, that is trying to mourn the passing of his father, the chief, without thinking or talking directly about him (tradition) and learn as much as he can from his uncle Joiauz, the regent, whilst his people are aiding Calojan in his war against the Sashan. i made a great mistake the first time I read it, and always made a point of explaining this to others. Part-time environmentalist and philanthropist Ben and his ex-mercenary buddy Chon run a Laguna Beach–based marijuana operation, reaping significant profits from their loyal clientele. I have to say though that I was a bit disappointed with the ending - I like things to be neatly finished off and this left some things unanswered in my mind !It's one of the books I'd want with me if I were stuck on an island somewhere, that's for sure, as it's full of useful hints and tips (like turning your bra into a utility belt and using the cups of it for fishing, and using your socks for straining bits out of water, and how to go about testing unfamiliar food, and how not to eat only coconut or get pawpaw juice in your eyes, and a million other things!

In this dark comic serving of everyday family life with contemporary cannibals, the Savages seek to hide in plain sight by setting up a vegan café. One that has forgotten his life on a farm, his family, his people, and run away to the lands of the empire. All of it was interesting, but perhaps some editing could've been done to pick up the pace of the story. Tonewise “Savages” feels like if Michael Mann made a modern day version of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. As always with Winslow this is well-written, funny, wise, wry, very violent, very racy/kinda filthy, and at least as much about the people as about the capers. The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged.
