The APC40 mkII features a 5x8 RGB LED clip-launching matrix, assignable A/B crossfader, 8 rotary knobs, 8 channel faders, and a send button for quick access to send busses.
The main things one might look for in a controller dedicated to Ableton Live, which aren’t found in the APC40 Mk2, are all related to MIDI creation, really. Connecting the Akai Apc 40 Mk2 with Ableton Live is pretty simple, and when the two are linked you'll be able to adjust the software's parameters from your midi controller.
The APC-40MKII comes with a whole host of software to get you going, such as Hybrid 3 AIR, SONiVOX Twist and 5GB of professional-quality audio samples. This is a much more logical setup, and as they are endless rotaries with LED ring lighting, will immediately adjust to match their mode, or channel as you navigate around your Live set. Eight Device Control knobs make it easy to tweak device parameters and light up to provide visual feedback of each parameter. I can set up the APC64 to be that but it seems like extra stuff to mentally keep up with during a live performance. I had Push2 in the past but sold it because it was big, heavy and didn't really meet my expectations with regards to producing / playing without looking at laptop screen.
In the time it took you to read this, you could have created your own custom Ableton Script for that controller sitting in front of you! Both feature 3 colour LED clip launch pads, rather than RGB, but those pads are just big enough to be usable. The Apc 40 Mk2 is equipped with a standard midi remote script in Ableton Live, so you just need to connect it (see instructions below) to get it working. While there’s a lot of crossover between these products, there are genuine points of difference that will steer you toward one or the other. When composing you still have the core workflow of selecting and arming tracks from the surface, with control of the Devices in the selected track. That’s ok in a very dark club space, but if you’re using the Mk2 in a lighter environment (daylight, for example) it can be quite hard to see at a glance exactly which clip is playing in any particular column.
