Miniatures: 1 Mighty Lord of Khorne, 1 Bloodsecrator, 1 Bloodstoker, 1 Khorgorath, 5 Blood Warriors, 10 Bloodreavers.

The Fyreslayers vanguard box isn’t very exciting but does come with a high 36% discount. It would have been nice to get a lizard for a bit of variety but this gives you a decent hero and two battleline so is a good base to build an army from. Another year another set of battle boxes. this time with more boxes available than we’ve seen before. last year we had 4 and this time we have 7. The Chaos Chariot is an interesting piece that can be assembled alternatively as a Gorebeast Chariot. Both have some abilities that allow to distinguish them. Each can be taken as a unit of 1 or as a unit of 3, with the Chaos Chariot counting as battleline. Fortunately, the Norn-Queens have been hard at work splicing together a new Combat Patrol box, which is ideal whether you’re brand new to the Tyranids or have been on board since Hive Fleet Behemoth was first sighted. This is great in that those books while containing awesome art work and fluff, really do not hold up to the state of the game currently. So that being said it would not surprise me if we see a new release for the Skaven battletome that also contains the Skaven Pestilens, so let’s build a 1000 point starter army around them. This Vanguard box, that replaces the previous Start Collecting exclusive to Daemons, nicely merge the mortal and daemonic side of the Disciples of Tzeentch. Both Chaos Knights and Chaos Warriors are battleline for this army. In conclusion this is a good set, a great replacement of the previous one and an excellent starting point for a Slaves to Darkness army. Even buying the second box would not be a sin.

Savings-wise, we’re once again probably looking at last year for reference where we had anything from 30% – 37% in savings for these boxes versus buying the units individually at retail. That’s Nothing to sniff at! it’s a solid saving. There are no alternative profiles and, aside some weapon options available for Tzaangors, they are all pretty straightforward. Still, with 27 miniatures and 5 units, this box is good value, and you could even consider buying a second box. Expand the dread territory of the Soulblight Dynasties with a vanguard box containing 29 miniatures. This bite-sized battalion is led by a vainglorious Vampire Lord, 20 Deathrattle Skeletons, five Blood Knights, and three monstrous Vargheists. Now we end the list with the low point of the christmas battleforces. The Stromdrakes and Annihilators are both tempting, but there are much better options in the Stormcast range than the other models on this list. Despite the savings I’d give this one a miss, buy the decent units separately and spend the remaining money on more competitive models. Overall of all the Combat Patrol Boxes, the new Genestealer Cults is a pretty good value in terms of both pricing and selection of models. Miniatures with one small Hero (HQ), and 33 melee troops all of which are battleline coming to a total of 645 points. Congregation of Filth: Made up of two units of plague monks and the plague furnace this lets your plague monks re roll failed charge rolls and gives them a 6+ ward save against all wounds. Which for a unit with no save is a big bonus. It also gives you a bonus artifact so that your Verminlord and plague furnace can each have one. The flesh is weak, which is the perfect excuse to upgrade your MKVI Tactical Space Marines with a range of cold, hard, cog-toothed Iron Hands upgrades.
